You won’t find many basic signs at Rock Island native Kate Price’s art and home decor booth at Freight House Farmers’ Market every weekend. Her funky and sarcastic signs are her –and hopefully– her customers’ thoughts come to life, with honest humor like “Pee like nobody is listening,” or “I’m not sarcastic, I’m just mean.”
Price had always made signs and similar crafts as a hobby before opening Just Kate Design. For 15 years, Price was in corporate banking as a means of employment and to support her son as a single mother. When her son graduated and moved out, Price began exploring the possibility of working on her craft hobby full time, and she’s been at the Farmers’ Market since 2016. Trading in high heels for flip flops and paint brushes, Just Kate Design has made Price 200% happier than her old office job. For her, the risk was worth the reward.
“Don’t be afraid to take that leap. I left corporate America – a good, solid foundation of employment and job security – and dove into this not really knowing if it was going to work,” Price said. “You will run into failures but it pushes you to figure out ‘how can I fix this,’ it helps you grow. Don’t be afraid to try new things out.”
She began with just simple home decor painted signs, but soon found she enjoyed the “edgier” catchphrases and slogans. You can find a variety of welcome signs like “Yay you’re here,” “Welcome, let’s talk about serial killers,” or “Go away.” She not only offers signs but also home decor like driftwood and beads that fits her bohemian, earthy aesthetic. As a dog owner herself, she also sells a variety of dog-themed signs like “Life is better with a dog,” or “Happiness is listening to your dog snore.”
Just Kate Design can be found outside at the Freight House Farmers’ Market every Saturday from May to October (weather permitting) and she also posts most of her work on her Facebook page. She plans on hosting an open house at the end of December 2022 to sell any items from the market season. Check out Just Kate Design for your honest home decor needs!
