Nourish Everyone Sustainably Together
This non-profit restaurant in Rock Island offers a dining experience that stands out from what has been seen before. The Nest Cafè “offers a pay-what-you-can” system, meaning that there are no set amounts for food items. Instead, any payment made is seen as a donation to the organization. This makes healthy, nutritional food much more accessible to those with food insecurities. When one person pays $10 or more for a plate, that helps unload the cost from someone who needs it.
Beyond cost, another important aspect of the NEST Cafè is its sustainable practices. The majority of the food used in cooking is locally sourced. Plenty of food is brought in from donations, sometimes even from local gardens! This reduces the environmental impact of shipping in food and saves food items that others might be preparing to throw away.
The cafè is a non-profit organization connected to One World Everybody Eats and as a result, volunteering is an important part of keeping it running. There currently is a volunteer portal available on the website for four different positions: server, closing clean-up, dishwasher, and host. Volunteers 12 -16 must be supervised by a parent or guardian.
To find unique and nutritional meals every day of the week, stop into the NEST Cafè.
